How salary tax is calculated

Salary tax in Pakistan uses slabs. Find the slab your annual taxable salary falls in, then add the fixed amount for that slab to the slab’s rate applied to the part of your salary above its lower limit. Divide by 12 for the monthly deduction.

Annual tax = fixed amount for your slab + slab rate × (annual salary − slab’s lower limit)

Taxable salary is your gross pay less allowances that the law exempts. Use the taxable figure on your salary slip or your employer’s tax certificate.

Frequently asked questions

What are the salary tax slabs for 2026-27?

For tax year 2027, salary up to PKR 600,000 a year is not taxed. Above that, rates rise through eight slabs: 1%, 11%, 20%, 25%, 29%, 32% and 35% on income above PKR 7,000,000. The full table is on this page.

Is there still a surcharge on high salaries?

No. The Finance Act 2026 withdrew the 9% surcharge for salaried individuals from tax year 2027. In tax year 2026 it applied to the tax of salaried people with taxable income above PKR 10 million.

Who counts as a salaried individual?

You are taxed at salaried rates when your salary is more than 75% of your taxable income. If business, rent or other income makes up a larger share, the non-salaried rates apply instead, and this calculator will understate your tax.

How is the monthly tax worked out?

The calculator divides your annual tax by 12. Your employer estimates your tax for the year and deducts it from each month’s pay, so the amount can change in months when your pay changes, for example with a bonus or an increment.

My employer already deducts tax. Do I still need to file a return?

Your employer’s deduction under section 149 does not file your return for you. Filing puts your name on FBR’s Active Taxpayers’ List, which lowers the tax you pay on property, vehicles and banking, and it is how you claim back any tax deducted beyond what you owe.

File Your Salary Return. Get on the ATL.

We file salaried returns on FBR IRIS, claim back extra tax your employer deducted and confirm your Active Taxpayer status.
